Victory lap continues for Daytona 500 winner

Peter Cardwell

Feb. 19--His interview with Daytona 500 winner Ryan Newman was winding to a close, but the TV reporter had one more question. “Er,” the journalist began, then plunged ahead: “Would you mind recording a message for my nephew’s bar mitzvah?” Without the blink of an eye, Newman looks straight into the camera and wishes his young fan a great day. Fighters go face to face, but not in the ring

Jed Kim

Feb. 19--Boxers Bernard Hopkins and Joe Calzaghe stood amid the remnants of movie sets at Planet Hollywood in Times Square this morning. Had they been actors, they couldn’t have played their roles any better. “You better be willing to die,” growled Hopkins, his face only inches away from his rival’s. “If you’re not, just make it easy on yourself and go home.” But it was the only direct show of aggression between the two fighters. At a press conference to discuss the upcoming Ring Magazine Light Heavyweight World Championship title fight, Calzaghe, 35, and Hopkins, 43, seemed more concerned with good boxing than they did in breaking each other down. That may be because the two titans are so evenly matched that theatrics won’t be necessary to attract viewers.
